CHESTERFIELD CO., NC (WJZY) - Investigators confirmed a body found in a shallow grave on Guess Road in Pageland Friday is that of Ternetha Ann Bennett.
During a news conference Monday, investigators said a mail carrier called police after smelling something foul and seeing buzzards.
Authorities determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma.
Police had been searching for Bennett's boyfriend- William Grant- but confirmed in the same news conference that they found his body in the Pee Dee River over the weekend.
Deputies with the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office got a call around 11:30 a.m. from a family who was fishing on the Pee Dee River. They notified police that they saw a body.
When officials from both CCSO and the coroner's office arrived on scene, they discovered a deceased African-American male approximately 50 years old. They say the body was in bad shape. Investigators said his hands were tied in front of him. They said he tied the knots himself.
Grant became the prime suspect in Bennett's disappearance. Police said the two had had an argument and that he was the last person to see her alive.
Police said they found surveillance video of Grant washing his car and cleaning shoes at a car wash when Bennett disappeared.
