2 dead, 3 taken to hospital in Union Co. crash

- Two people are dead and three others were transported to the hospital following a serious crash Monday morning in Union County.

According to State Highway Patrol, the two-vehicle accident happened on E. Village Drive at Old Pageland Road.

They said the driver of a truck crossed the center line and hit an SUV with a man and three children inside.

The driver of the truck, Richard Lewis Moss, 43, of Charlotte, was pronounced dead on scene.

A 10-year-old boy who was inside the SUV was airlifted to CMC-Main with serious injuries. Troopers said the boy suffered from a lacerated liver, which had to be removed. He was placed on life support - and since there were no transplants available he passed away.

The man and two girls in the SUV were taken to CMC-Main with non-life threatening injuries. Police said the man driving the children was the mother's boyfriend. They remain in the hospital with several broken bones.

Troopers said the SUV was heading to Rock Rest Elementary School in Monroe when the crash occurred.
