STATESVILLE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Two people were killed in two separate crashes on I-40 in Iredell County early Saturday morning, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
The first crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. near mile-marker 142, west of Statesville. A passenger vehicle crossed the median and struck an 18-wheeler head on, causing the 18-wheeler to overturn. The driver of the 18-wheeler was pronounced dead by emergency responders. The two occupants of the passenger vehicle had to be extricated from their vehicle. They were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
The second crash occurred around 7:45 a.m. near mile-marker 141, when a motorcyclist ran into the rear of a truck that was slowing down to stop for traffic that was backed up due to the earlier crash. The occupant of the motorcycle was also pronounced dead by emergency responders.
The identities of the deceased have not been released at this time, according to troopers.
