Woman charged after fire displaces families from east Charlotte apartments

- A woman is behind bars after investigators say she set her apartment on fire, forcing the rescue of a baby and four adults.

Shontavia Gingles, 21, has been charged with first degree arson felony. She was released Monday night on a $10,000 bond.

Firefighters say the call went out just before noon Monday. When they arrived to the Timbers’ complex on Magnolia Drive, several people were trapped on the second floor.

Quentin Mavar, the battalion chief  says they rescued four adults and one child.

Firefighters were able to clear out what little was left from the apartment where the fire started.

Corey Brown, a neighbor living next door says he was home when the fire broke out.

“I saw smoke coming through the wall and I wasn’t using my stove, so I thought, ‘what’s going on?’” Brown said.

Charlotte Fire says more than 20 people, including children, have been affected by the fire. The Red Cross is helping those impacted.

The fire only destroyed the apartment that it started in, according to officials. The eight units around it suffered smoke damage.
