Police chase in Rock Hill ends in fatality

- The Rock Hill Police Department and the SC Highway Patrol are investigating a multi-vehicle crash that happened in Rock Hill Wednesday afternoon where five people were injured and one woman died.

Officers said they had attempted to make a traffic stop in the area when the driver of the vehicle fled and got into an accident with two other vehicles.

Investigators were trying to stop 23-year-old Stevie McClinton around 4:15 p.m. on Robinson Street where he sped off. McClinton was wanted by SC Probation and Parole and the investigators had information that he was possibly selling drugs and firearms out of his vehicle.

He was also to be considered armed and dangerous. When investigators identified him driving his 1973 Buick Century, they tried to perform a traffic stop on Robinson Street by activating their blue lights and then their siren.

Investigators said McClinton accelerated down Robinson Street and ran the stop sign at Robinson and Crawford Roads, turning right toward Heckle Blvd. At that time officers turned off their blue lights and siren and turned right onto Crawford Road toward Heckle Blvd. when they saw the Buick ignore the red traffic signal at Heckle Blvd. and run into a 2013 Toyota Prius, pushing the Prius into a 1983 Chevrolet Pickup Truck.

Officers tired to help the victims of the crash while attempting to arrest McClinton. McClinton jumped out of the car and fled the scene on foot. Officers said they were able to apprehend him a short time later following a foot-chase. McClinton began to actively resist and punch the officer, according to investigators. Investigators said several civilians came to help the officers get McClinton into custody.

A total of five people were treated by EMS and transported to hospitals in Rock Hill and Charlotte. The driver of the Prius, Virginia Bartell, was airlifted to CMC where she later died, according to SC State Highway Patrol.

The SCHP and Rock Hill PD Serious Accident Reconstruction Team are still actively investigating the accident.  During the investigation officers located a large amount of drugs in the trunk of McClinton’s Buick as well as two firearms.  Investigators this morning have charged Stevie McClinton with: Failure to Stop for Blue Lights with Death; Leaving the scene of an Accident resulting in great bodily injury; Leaving the Scene of an Accident resulting in Injury; Possession with Intent to Distribute Ecstasy 2nd Offense; Resisting Arrest (B); Trafficking Crack Cocaine 2nd Offense; Possession of Marijuana 2nd Offense; Possession of a stolen pistol; Possession of a firearm during the Commission of Crime of Violence.

McClinton will go before a judge in Rock Hill Municipal Court at 2:00 p.m. for a Bond Hearing.
