Man assaults two people, shoves shotgun down man's throat, deputies say

-  A Statesville man is in custody after authorities say he assaulted two people and held a man captive before shoving a shotgun down the man’s throat.

Avery Labonze Stokes, 31 of Statesville, is charged with kidnapping and assault, according to Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to a home in the 100 block of Cedar Ridge Loop in Statesville Thursday night. When deputies arrived, they heard a fight happening inside the home and threats “to kill the victim” being made, according to the sheriff’s office. When deputies knocked on the door, they were greeted by Stokes.

A man inside the home was able to escape and run from the residence. He was later picked up by a family member and taken to a local hospital.

While investigating, deputies received another call that another victim, a woman, was found along Caldwell Street in Statesville and taken to Iredell Memorial Hospital.

According to investigators, both victims were strangled by Stokes and were assaulted in the face and head. The man also received injuries to his mouth and throat from a shotgun being shoved down his throat, deputies said.

The woman was treated and released from the hospital, while the man was transferred to NC Baptist Hospital for further treatment of his injuries.

Stokes was arrested and taken to the Iredell County Detention Center and given a $150,000 secured bond on the man. No bond was given on the assault on the woman.
