Check your pets: 4th rabies case confirmed in Gaston County, NC

- Residents are advised to make sure their pet’s rabies shots are up to date after a wild raccoon tested positive in Gaston County.

On Sunday, September 11, Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement were called about a raccoon showing signs of sickness/neurological issues in the areas of Dornoch Road in Gastonia.

Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated and impounded the animal. The raccoon was then sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh, where it tested positive for rabies, according to police.

This is the fourth confirmed case of rabies in Gaston County this year.

The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement Division stress the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all of your pet’s health and safety as well as the health and safety of their owners and community.
