Police: Man steals girlfriends car, leads officers on highway chase

- A man was taken into custody over the weekend after leading police on a highway chase in a stolen vehicle, according to the Lincolnton Police Department.

At about 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, officers were called to the 100 block of Deaton Avenue to a report of a domestic disturbance. The woman who lived at the home said that her boyfriend, Dustin Bingham, 20 of Gastonia, would not leave, according to police.

Bingham eventually left after being asked by officers.

At about 11:53 p.m., officers received a second call that Bingham was attempting to steal his girlfriend’s vehicle. While en route, they saw Bingham driving the vehicle at the stop light at N. General Boulevard and E. Main Street, according to police. They said Bingham failed to stop when officers attempted to pull him over.

Authorities said Bingham led police on a chase onto U.S. Highway 321 heading south towards Gaston County and continued onto Interstate 85. Bingham was eventually taken into custody thanks to help from Gaston County Police and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Bingham faces charges of larceny of a motor vehicle, feeling, resisting an officer, trespassing, operating a vehicle without a license, careless and reckless driving and was served a warrant for probation violation out of Gaston County.

He was placed in the Gaston County Jail with a $6,000 secured bond. His first court date is set for Monday, September 19 in Lincolnton County District Court.
