GASTON COUNTY, NC (FOX 46) - Authorities in Gaston County have charged a Belmont woman with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of a man who used to be her roommate.
Iva Dawn Helms, 32, was taken into custody on Wednesday, October 19 by the Lowell Police Department and Gaston County Police Department and charged with first-degree murder in the death of James Williams Dellinger, of Lowell.
According to police, on Saturday, October 15 they responded to Dellinger's home in reference to a 911 call from Helms saying she had found Dellinger dead from apparent knife wounds.
Gaston County Police detectives and crime scene investigators responded to assist with the investigation. Helms had been a prior roommate of Dellinger’s and had most recently had been staying with him for several days, police said.
Detectives said Helms was arrested after several interviews and a consultation with the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office, and the District Attorney’s Office.
Helms was taken into custody at her home without incident. She is currently being held at the Gaston County Jail without bond.
At this time, the motive is unclear.
