Elderly man in custody after shooting at deputies in Rowan County

- A 71-year-old man is facing multiple charges after police say he shot through a door where he thought deputies were standing.

The incident happened at 10:26 a.m. Thursday, October 27 at a home located along Old Beatty Ford Road in Salisbury.

Rowan County 911 had received a call that a man was "acting out of his head" and the caller was scared of him.

Upon arrival, deputies, EMS and family members tried to get Robert Dean Ashby under control and to come out of the house. Deputies learned through one of Ashby's family members that he had multiple firearms in the house and was armed.

When learning that Ashby had a gun, two deputies moved from a door where they were standing, just as the door was shot with a .45 handgun.

Eventually, deputies were able to get Ashby to exit the house.

Ashby was taken by EMS to the hospital for a medical issue. Deputies have obtained warrants on Ashby for two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement official and one count of resisting a public officer.

Service on these charges is pending the release of Ashby from medical care.
