Volunteers restore Gastonia veteran's home destroyed in fire

- Volunteers stepped in Thursday to help restore a Marine Corps veteran's home that was severely damaged in a fire last year.

More than 95 area Home Depot associates partnered with Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of North Carolina to transform the home of Ace Beam located on E. Park Avenue in Gastonia.

Authorities said financial hardship, declining health and frequent hospital visits prevented Beam from making repairs to his home.

The Home Depot and local contractors stepped in to help restore Beam’s home.

Volunteer projects throughout the day included:

•         Installing new doors, windows, lighting, flooring, siding and walls
•         Replacing the ceiling
•         Creating a new entryway
•         Updating the kitchen with new cabinets and countertops
•         Renovating bathroom toilets, sinks, tubs and showers

As part of Celebration of Service, The Home Depot Foundation said they will donate up to $500,000 to veteran causes when customers show support for veterans on social media by sharing a #ServiceSelfie from September 1 through Veterans Day.

Every #ServiceSelfie shared on Twitter and Instagram, as well as every comment and share on Team Depot’s nonprofit spotlight Facebook posts, will count $1 towards the $500,000 goal.
