Gastonia community raises more than $700 for fallen Shelby officer

- The Gastonia Police and Fire Departments participated in a Boots vs. Badges chili cook-off. The friendly competition was in honor of Shelby Police officer,Tim Brackeen. Officer Brackeen was killed in the line of duty back in September.

All benefits from Sunday's event went to the officer's family.

"It's really important for us to give back in anyway that we can," said Matt Harakal of Food Lion. "It's a great way to bring members of the community together with some of those fellas that served the community so well and really give back for those in need.

Food Lion contributed a $500 gift certificate to the Brackeen family.

Although the tragic death didn't happen in the Gastonia community, being able to contribute was a win for all involved.

"Public safety as a whole is a brotherhood that's why we have such a close relationship, said Gastonia Fire Chief, Phil Welch. When it happens no matter where, you can feel the impact."

'It is a brotherhood and it's a time we come together, said Gastonia Assistant Police Chief, Travis Brittain. "We are there for each other and certainly the community backing as well so we hope to never find ourselves in position that took place at Shelby PD, but if so we knew they would be there for us as well."

The community raised $739.33.
