Driver charged with involuntary manslaughter after pedestrian hit, killed in SE Charlotte

- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have charged the driver involved in a fatal crash involving a pedestrian late Sunday night into Monday.

Officers were called to the 7200 block of E. Independence Blvd. at 11:58 p.m. in reference to the crash.

Robert Melton was found lying in the street in the right outbound lane. He was pronounced dead by Medic at 12:09 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle, Wayne Daniel, was traveling in the outbound left lane of Independence Blvd. and as he passed through the intersection of Village Lake Drive his vehicle hit Melton with the right front fender. Daniel remained on scene and was not impaired on alcohol or drugs, according to police.

Police say Melton was wearing dark colored clothing at the time of the crash, was not in the crosswalk and was crossing against the pedestrian crossing signal.

Daniel has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving.

After investigating police discovered Daniel was driving at a high rate of speed and in a careless and reckless manner. Daniel was arrested on Tuesday without incident.
