Man falls to his death at Burke County state park

- A North Carolina State Park was hit with a tragedy coming into the weekend.

A 25-year-old man fell to his death at the South Mountains State Park in Burke County around 4:45 p.m. Friday, park officials say.

South Mountains Park Ranger Lance Huss told media outlets that Ryan Yount was walking near the endge of the High Shoals Falls when he lost his footing and went over.

The man fell 80 feet from the waterfall and did not survive, according to park officials.

Huss says Yount was visiting the park with some friends and his girlfriend.

Based on evidence gathered up to this point, Huss believes the fall was accidental.

No one else was injured.

Yount's funeral service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Claremont.
