MOORESVILLE, N.C. (FOX 46) - Family members of a man who was killed in a hit-and-run Sunday night want answers.
“That’s my son and I’d like to know what happened,” the victim’s father told FOX 46 Charlotte.
Mooresville Police said around 10:45 p.m., they found Willie Byers III, 56, critically injured and lying in the street after being hit by a vehicle. Byers was pronounced dead at the scene.
Family members of Byers said he had recently moved in with his parents from Rock Hill, SC.
“I am very sorry for their loss,” said Major Gerald Childress with the Mooresville Police Department. “We don’t know the circumstances surrounding why he was in the roadway, that’s still under investigation.”
An autopsy is being performed on the victim, which investigators say is standard procedure in a case like this.
Police don’t have a clear description of the suspect's vehicle and want people to come forward with information. A small passenger vehicle is the only description they have from witnesses.
Childress says there were some fragments that came off the vehicle once the collision happened and officers are in the process of trying to match those pieces to a specific vehicle type.
“We do want to have that closure for the family and the closure of the case,” Childress said.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Mooresville Police Department at 704-664-3311 or Mooresville South Iredell Crime Stoppers at 704-658-9056.
