Man shot and killed in the University area, relative arrested

- An altercation in the University area leads to one man shot and killed Monday evening.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department received a call around 8:00 p.m. for an assault with a deadly weapon happening in the 10600 block of Atkins Ridge Drive. When officers arrived, they found 63-year-old Harold Rudolph Jones outside the house with a gunshot wound. According to Medic, he was pronounced dead on scene.

This marks Charlotte's 49th homicide in Charlotte in 2017.

CMPD charged 22-year-old Daryl Roby with the murder of Jones. Police told Fox 46 Charlotte that Jones and Roby were related, they're stepfather and stepson, and had an altercation prior to the shooting.

"The initial call for service indicated that the incident appeared to be a suicide but further investigation led detectives to conclude the incident was a homicide," police say. Roby remained on scene and agreed to speak with detectives at police headquarters, where he was arrested and charged with murder.

Police are asking anyone with additional information to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
