MINT HILL, N.C. (FOX 46) - Some businesses in the Matthews-Mint Hill area are getting more traffic into their parking lots, and owners say it's not helping their establishments.
A big construction project happening around the Highway 51 and Idlewild Road area has a major intersection and portions of streets leading up to it, blocked off and shutdown.
Business managers in The Hoods Crossroads Shopping Center have voiced concerns to law enforcement officers about drivers not using the designated traffic detours and instead creating their own alternate routes.
Mint Hill Police Chief, Tim Ledford, said businesses and customers have told police they’ve witnessed people speeding through the parking lots. Ledford also told Fox 46 Charlotte that the increased traffic through shopping centers and surrounding businesses have resulted in pedestrians almost being struck by vehicles.
Ledford is asking for the public to follow the four designated detours and avoid approaching the areas of construction.
Because business parking lots are privately owned and operated, Ledford said they cannot regulate traffic, because it isn’t a public street.
The NCDOT project is expected to be completed in mid-August.
