CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A teenage girl says she was robbed at gunpoint while trying to buy a phone she found on the app "letgo" over the weekend.
FOX 46 asked how the 16-year-old from Gastonia was feeling after the incident. She's asked to remain anonymous.
"Scared, nervous, I wanted them to get caught right away," she said. "I couldn't really sleep last night. I went to sleep around three, woke up at seven, went back to sleep, woke up at nine."
She says Sunday afternoon was her first and probably last time buying something through the "letgo" app.
"It was two of them, a girlfriend and boyfriend. The girlfriend got out of the car, went to the truck, got a gun, and pointed it to my neck and said that she would need that money. She reached into my left pocket, got my money, and got back in the car. I argued with the boyfriend a bit asking him to take the phone but just give me the money back, but he just got in the car and left," the teen said.
Her mom was just a few feet away when it happened.
"She told me it would be after 5. it was around 2:15-2:30. There's a ring at the doorbell because I wasn't expecting the people to arrive before that time, I stayed upstairs. She's got it, I thought it was family members," the mother said.
They were all caught off guard, even though this teen is a veteran of a similar online marketplace-- Craigslist.
"I don't know why this time I thought it would be ok because we never do it, but I thought it would be ok because her father would be home and could handle that,"
At the end of the day, the bad guys got away with both a phone and $140 in cash. But what they left behind was invaluable.
"She might have been out of a phone and money, but her life wasn't taken," the teen's mom said.
The Ranlo Police Chief says he's working on getting us the 911 tape and a picture of the suspect's car.
