CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - CMPD said robberies and burglaries of pharmacies is a growing and alarming issue.
"It's certainly an indicator of the (opioid) crisis that we have," Sgt. Brian Scharf said.
Genie Health Mart in Plaza MIdwood was burglarized early Sunday morning. It's the fourth time its been burglarized and its been robbed twice.
Since 2016, there have been 18 robberies and 22 burglaries of pharmacies across the Queen City.
"We don't know about gang affiliations, quite yet, but I will say that they are an organized group," Sgt. Scharf said.
Plenty of these pharmacies have been hit up multiple times, causing most to increase security measures. Some, even keeping doors locked during operating hours and buzzing customers in.
"Our drug stores are going to be like Fort Knox," Genie Health Pharmacist Robby Jones said. "I mean, we're going to have to."
