NoDa home crushed by tree after severe storms rip through Charlotte

- A man’s home was crushed by a massive tree that was uprooted by severe thunderstorms that fired across the Charlotte area Tuesday evening.

The storms brought hail, lightning, and damaging winds of about 40 miles per hour. The saturated ground combined with the fast moving wind brought down many trees across the area and caused extensive property damage.

“Hail hitting the windows; almost sounded like a tornado out here with all the wind and stuff,” says Teland Todd, a neighbor of the man whose house was crushed by an uprooted tree.

Todd says he was already concerned about the number of mature trees in the area because this isn’t the first time a large tree has fallen and caused damage on this very street.

“Six months ago we saw what happened across the street. Especially with this big tree right here with the winds coming, I was a bit nervous,” said Todd.

The homeowner was out of town at the time of the incident and there were no injuries. The owner is expected to return home in the next few days, but Charlotte Fire Department has deemed the home unsafe for occupancy.
