8-year-old dies following Statesville car accident

- An 8-year-old child has passed away following a car accident Friday in Statesville, according to Highway Patrol. 

The accident occurred Salisbury Highway US 70 at Third Creek Rd when a car attempted to make an illegal u-turn. The car was struck on the driver's side by an oncoming tractor trailer, says Highway Patrol. 

The child was injured in the accident and passed away at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. 

According to Highway Patrol there were five passengers in the car, none of whom were wearing seatbelts.

The mother of the child was in the passenger seat while, her boyfriend, Daniel Chase Bowlin was driving. Two children, one of whom was the victim, and another adult were sitting in the back seat.

The three passengers in the back seat were trapped after the accident and had to be ejected, says Highway Patrol. 

Charges are being filed against Bowlin as a result of the incident. The driver of the tractor trailer was not seriously injured.
