Driver charged with DWI in deadly rollover crash

- UPDATE:  July 22, 2017  -   Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have identified the person killed in this crash as Curtis E. Saunders, 23 years of age.

 

The driver of a deadly rollover crash in northeast Charlotte early Thursday morning has been charged with DWI, police said.

Benjamin James Graves, 23, is charged with driving while impaired. He remains at Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. 

The single-vehicle accident happened at 1:48 a.m. Friday, July 21 on N. Tryon Street at Austin Drive. 

Upon arrival, CMPD officers located a 2013 Dodge Challenger on its roof. Medic pronounced the front passenger dead on scene. Graves was taken to CMC for treatment. 

The preliminary investigation determined the Dodge Challenger was traveling east on Austin Circle at a high rate of speed when it lost control and drove off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle initially struck a fence and a tree.  

After impact with the tree, the vehicle rotated into a telephone pole coming to rest on its roof on Austin Drive, police said.
