One child drowned, two others taken to the ER with serious injuries after near-drowning

- The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is conducting a death investigation after one child drowned at the Vista Villa Apartments located on Montego Drive.

North Tryon Division Officers responded to an assist Medic call at 5:51 p.m. for a possible drowning at that location that involved two sisters, ages 8 and 11.

The 8 year old was pronounced deceased at Carolina’s Medical Center-University.  The 11 year old is listed as being in stable condition at Carolina’s Medical Center-Main.  Their names will not be released due to their ages.

CMPD Homicide Detectives says their initial investigation has revealed that there were fifteen or more people at the apartment complex community pool when this tragedy occurred. At this point, foul play is not suspected.

Around 2 pm, another child was taken to the hospital by Medic after nearly drowning in their community pool on Farmer street in southwest Charlotte.

According to Medic, the child had life threatening injuries upon transport to Carolinas Medical Center, but while enroute to the hospital, the condition improved to serious injuries.

People living at the apartment complex tell FOX 46, the pool is actually closed and people jumped over the fence to find relief from the heat.

"The next thing I know I see the little boy, laying down, he can't breathe, he can't do nothing, his granddaddy helping him do CPR, if they can just have at least a security guard or a lifeguard out here patrolling, it's hot 'ya feel me?" A man that wanted to remain anonymous said.
