Teen shot in head in SE Charlotte dies, police say

- UPDATE: Dionte' Hunter, 17, who was shot in the head Monday night on McMullen Way, passed away Wednesday as a result of his injuries, according to CMPD. His family has been notified of his death.

The suspect in the case, Steven Black, is facing a murder charge. Detectives say the warrant will be served at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, where he remains in custody.

A 17-year-old boy is in the hospital with serious injuries after he was shot while inside a vehicle in southeast Charlotte, police said. 

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said at 11:15 p.m. Monday, July 24 officers responded to Glendora Drive and Monroe Road for reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers found a 17-year-old boy inside a vehicle on Monroe Road with apparent gunshot wounds. He was transported to Carolina's Medical Center-Main with life-threatening injuries. CMPD determined the shooting occurred on McMullen Way at Monroe Road. 

They said the initial investigation revealed the victim, who was riding with a female passenger in the car, was meeting with someone in the 500 block of McMullen Way when their vehicle was shot into and he was struck by at least one bullet. 

The teen was able to drive a very short distance onto Monroe Road before the vehicle came to a stop. The suspect(s) were then seen by a witness running from the scene. K-9 and the CMPD Helicopter Unit both responded to assist with the search but the suspect(s) were not located.  

CMPD continues to search for those suspect(s) Tuesday. 

The female witness was transported to CMPD Headquarters overnight where she was interviewed by detectives. Her age is unknown at this time.
