Police: 80-year-old woman killed in Gastonia wreck

- An 80-year-old woman died in the hospital following a two-vehicle wreck Sunday afternoon in Gastonia, police said.

The accident happened at 12:16 p.m. Sunday, August 6 in the 1700 block of Union Road.

Police said Patricia Deal, 80, of Gastonia, was leaving the Firestone Wesleyan Church and attempting to turn left onto Union Road from the church parking lot. As Deal pulled out onto Union Road in her 1998 Ford Taurus she was struck on the driver side by a 2006 Jeep Cherokee driven by Isabella Fertitta, 18, of Gastonia, police said.

Both drivers were transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center. Deal was transferred to Carolinas Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Police said Fertitta’s injuries appear to be minor. Neither speed nor impaired driving seem to be a factor. Anyone with any information may contact Officer Z.J. Lechette at 704-866-6702.
