CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46) - Crews responded to two separate crashes on both sides of the interstate Tuesday morning.
The first accident happened on I-77 NB near Exit 11. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police told FOX 46 Charlotte four construction workers were hit by an oncoming vehicle. They were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The two lanes blocked off are now open.
As crews cleaned up I-77 NB a truck punctured a tank causing a fuel spill across the southbound part of the interstate near Exit 11.
Emergency crews shut down all lanes of I-77 SB for the fuel spill cleanup
North Carolina Department of Transportation says with all the construction projects going on there's added congestion on the interstate and driver's need to be aware of the best
"One prime thing to do is to slow down. A lot of times during these projects we have the speed limit reduced. When you're driving through a work zone increase your following distance because you never know what the car in front of you will do," said Jen Thompson with NC DOT.
Thompson says her department does their part as well to make sure they are being as safe as possible
"We will have routine tailgate meetings and safety meetings with our own team and contractors. For long scale projects, we have monthly meetings to discuss any kind of safety issues that may pop up," said Thompson.
