UNION COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Two elderly people and two people in their late 20's were killed when the car they were traveling in was hit by a tractor trailer Monday afternoon in Union County, according to state highway patrol.
The accident happened on Lancaster Highway and Nesbitt Road. Troopers say a 2017 Toyota Camry failed to yield and pulled out in front of the 18-wheeler.
What's left of the Toyota Camry is barely recognizable. First responders tells FOX 46 Charlotte that they are familiar with the dangers along the stretch of Lancaster Highway, a rural road with heavy traffic connecting Waxhaw to Monroe.
"In the three years that I have been working here it has been a highway that has a lot of wrecks," said Trooper JD Kitchens with State Highway Patrol.
A witness told investigators that the driver of the Camry looked right, but not left and was struck by the tractor trailer. The driver of the semi had little time to react. The cab of the truck slammed into the car, pushing it off the road. The drivers side of the car was pancaked from the collision.
All four people inside were taken to the hospital where they later died, authorities said. Highway Patrol believes all four killed in the crash were a family from New Hampshire. Their names have not yet been released.
