Sex offenders receive Halloween visit from Sheriff's Department

There are more than 1,000 registered sex offenders in Mecklenburg County and most of them are receiving a visit from the Sheriff's Department over Halloween weekend.

The visits are part of the Department's mandatory address confirmation for these registered offenders. They're being conducted over Halloween weekend because of how frequent children take to the streets for trick-or-treating.

"You have children out on the streets for trick-or-treat, and majority of our sex offenders have indecent liberty charges," Deputy Robert Sherwin said.

Registered sex offenders in North Carolina are not allowed to decorate their home for Halloween or keep front porch lights on -- anything that can entice children to walk up to their house for candy.
