Union Co. superintendent will be investigated

- The Union County School Board is launching an investigation into the school district's superintendent.

Doctor Mary Ellis is accused of having close ties with a computer company that's earned millions of dollars from the school system.

The county commissioners office will ask the sheriff's office and SBI to investigate.

The school board met behind closed doors Tuesday afternoon where they voted to launch the investigation after some Union County taxpayers called for an investigation of the School District's Superintendent.

"You need to start wondering how the public's money is being used and who's being benefited from it," said Sean Maher, resident of Union County.

In 2014, uncovered paperwork shows Ellis started a private consult group, Educatrx Inc.

The treasurer of Educatrx is Jason Mooneyham, according to the documents. He is also Vice President of sales at a computer company, Lenovo.

The school district recently purchased 10,000 computers from Lenovo.

"That's when it became to me a conflict of interest to have a personal relationship with a vendor that Union County uses," Maher said.

Maher uncovered this information after Ellis started her business with the Lenovo sales executive as her treasurer.

"This is about the public trust and what's ethical, unethical, a conflict of interest moving forward," Maher said.

The school district says its relationship with Lenovo started before Dr. Ellis was Superintendent and that the purchase of 10,000 computers was to replace dated computers.

They would not comment whether or not the Board of Education was aware of Ellis' relationship with Mooneyham prior to purchasing the laptops.

The Board of Education will discuss this personnel matter in closed session on Tuesday.
