Sheriff asks SBI to investigate Union Superintendent

Union County School Board Member Kevin Stewart filed a criminal complaint against Superintendent Dr. Mary Ellis Wednesday. That complaint prompted Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathey to ask the SBI to investigate.

The Union County Sheriff's Office and SBI had previously been waiting on a formal request to investigate Ellis' company, Educatrix, and a business relationship with a Lenovo executive.

The treasurer of Educatrx is Jason Mooneyham. He is also Vice President of sales at a computer company, Lenovo. The school district recently purchased 10,000 computers from Lenovo, a several million dollar sale to Lenovo. Some Union Board of Education members and county commissioners say there may have been a conflict of interest in the sale.

The school board met behind closed doors Tuesday afternoon where they voted to launch the investigation after some Union County taxpayers called for an investigation of Ellis. The sheriff asked the SBI to investigate because the sheriff's office deals directly with the school system.
