ROCK HILL, SC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A Rock Hill family is left fighting for their lives after flames tore through their home. Five kids and their father remain in a hospital Sunday night. Their mother was killed in the blaze.
“No words can describe it because this is the first time I’ve ever had a tragedy like this in my life,” said Gwendolyn Isom.
The grandmother and mother-in-law was heartbroken Sunday after the fire tore through her son’s Rock Hill home on Southland Dr. sending her five grandkids and son who his fighting for his life to the hospital.
Her 35-year-old daughter-in-law Yolanda Isom didn’t make it out.
“She had her nice ways she was always with a smile. I’ve known her since she was a young girl,”
Gwendolyn Isom FOX 46 by phone while on her way to Augusta, GA where her son and three of her grandkids are recovering in a burn center there.
The other two grandkids whose injuries aren't as severe are recovering in a Charlotte hospital.
“When they first said it was a fire I thought it was something minor and I tried to call the house and the cell phone because I thought it might be something minor,” Isom said.
It wasn't until Gwendolyn got to the hospital that she realized the tragedy the fire resulted in.
“When they first told me that she was possibly dead it just didn’t hit me right there and then it hit me when I got to the hospital.”
The fire department and SLED are both investigating the cause of the fire.
