ROCK HILL, SC (WJZY) - A severely injured pit bull who is believed to have been used for bait in dog fighting was discovered last week in the woods off Vernsdale Road near Rambo Road in Rock Hill.
The dog, named Rambo by his rescuers, was rushed to a veterinarian and has since undergone treatment for severe gashes and bite wounds as well as surgery to amputate part of his infected leg.
Rambo is expected to recover, but Rock Hill police have yet to determine who is responsible for abusing and abandoning him.
PETA announced on Wednesday they're offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime.
"This sweet dog endured the agony and terror of apparently being left for dead, all alone in the North Carolina woods with bloody gashes, bite wounds, and a cripplingly infected leg," said PETA Senior Director Colleen O'Brien in a written statement, released on Wednesday. "PETA is urging anyone with information to come forward immediately, before anyone else gets hurt."
Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Rock Hill Police Department at 803-329-7200.
