Charlotte, N.C. - It was an ecological disaster in Charlotte. A day before Thanksgiving, about one-thousand gallons of diesel fuel spilled from the NASCAR tower in uptown into Little Sugar Creek. A lot of wildlife died, but twenty ducks were rescued, cleaned up and nursed back to health. On Thursday, eight of them were released at Freedom Park.
"When the fuel gets on their feathers, they lose their buoyancy. They can drown in the water and get wet in the rain. We wouldn't want to allow them out unless they were completely waterproof," said Jennifer Jordan with Carolina Waterfowl Rescue.
The other ducks will be set free before the New Year once they're ready. The investigation into Parkway Properties is still ongoing. A possible fine has not been set.
