Suspect identified in second officer-involved shooting in three days

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police were involved in a shooting in the 3400 block of Forestbrook Drive in west Charlotte. This is the second officer-involved shooting in 3 days. Police say the suspect in this shooting is dead. No officers were hurt.

CMPD says patrol went to the neighborhood at about 5 a.m. after they got a call about shots being fired. When they got there, Carlton Antonio Murphy walked out of an apartment on the second floor and started shooting at officers from the balcony, hitting a patrol car. Officer Jacob Meadors shot back and Murphy went back inside, according to police. When the SWAT team went inside, they found Murphy dead. It's not clear at this point if the suspect died from a self-inflicted wound, or from shots fired by police.

CMPD says no innocent bystanders or residents were injured during the incident.

More than 30 shots were fired by Murphy, according to CMPD.

Officer Meadors has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.

Officer Meadors has been employed with the CMPD since October 18, 2010, and is currently assigned to the Freedom Division.
