Two murder suspects charged after SWAT situation

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have charged two suspects in the murder of Bennie Edwards Bennett Jr.

Lakisha Renee Brooks and Raymond Bernard Sherrill have both been charged with the murder of Bennett.

On Thursday afternoon detectives with CMPD attempted to serve warrants to Brooks and Sherrill at a home on the 200 block of Bradford Drive. The pair refused to make contact with detectives, according to police.

SWAT was called to the scene along with a K-9 Unit. Police say after several attempts of trying to reach the suspects SWAT  broke into the home and took Brooks and Sherrill into custody.

Police blocked off streets during the situation to secure the area and for safety reasons.

Both suspects were taken to police headquarters where they were interviewed and charged. Sherrill has been charged with  murder and Brooks has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm by felon, according to police.

Bennett was shot and killed in the 3800 block of Brookshire Boulevard at the end of last month. Police found Bennett lying in the parking lot suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective.
