YORK COUNTY, SC (FOX 46 WJZY) - An elderly man was struck and killed by a car early Tuesday morning in York County while attempting to retrieve a ladder that had fallen off his vehicle, police said.
The incident happened at 6:10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3 on Highway 21 North between Coltharp Road and the bridge at Steele Creek.
Upon arrival, police determined Jimmie Dale Burns, 72, of Fort Mill, SC was traveling southbound on Highway 21 when a ladder fell from the back of his vehicle into the roadway. Burns stopped his vehicle partially in the southbound travel lane, and apparently stepped out of his vehicle and into the northbound lane to retrieve the ladder.
At that time, police said Burns was struck by a vehicle in the northbound lane, driven by a 19-year-old woman, from Chester, South Carolina. Police said no charges will be filed against the driver.
