CHARLOTTE, NC - Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested a man connected to several reported break-ins from newly built homes.
Officers say Larry Smith faces multiple charges including felony breaking and entering, and possession of stolen property.
In January, the Crime Analysis Unit saw a spike in new home construction thefts that were targeting newly installed appliances.
Police were able to identify more than 20 thefts that occurred since December 28, 2015, affecting several CMPD Divisions. Detectives with the Targeted Response & Apprehension Unit were notified and began an investigation.
On January 29, police located Smith leaving the scene of a break-in on Graypak Drive in the North Division with a stove in the back of his pick-up truck.
Detectives, along with North Division patrol officers, conducted a traffic stop nearby and determined that the break-in occurred at 5302 Graypark Drive
Smith was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was interviewed by detectives. During the interview, Smith confessed to a second theft that was reported on December 28, 2015 at 5306 Graypark Drive.
Smith remains in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
