BURKE COUNTY, NC - Deputies arrested a Conover man following a sexual assault investigation in Catawba County.
According to the Burke County Sheriff's Office, around 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31 investigators were contacted by Catawba County in regards to a sexual assault.
Catawba deputies were called to a local hospital in reference to a patient with signs of severe sexual trauma. Early into the investigation, deputies established evidence to believe the sexual assault might have happened in Burke County.
Both Burke County and Catawba County investigators worked together to locate Michael Weaver whom they considered a suspect in this case. During questioning, Weaver denied harming the victim.
As the investigation progressed, deputies determined the sexual assault likely occurred at Lowman's Motel in Hildebran. Investigators searched the motel and found several key items of evidence.
On Monday, Feb. 1, 2016 Weaver was taken into custody without incident. He's charged with one count of first-degree forcible rape.
Weaver is being held at the Burke Catawba Confinement Facility on a $250,000 secured bond.
