Driver charged in fatal I-77 hit and run

The driver charged in a hit-and-run that killed a Salisbury woman has been transported from Charleston County to Chester County, police say.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol say warrants were obtained last week for Stevie Wolfe Breland, 58, in connection with the February 8 collision in Chester.

Breland is charged with hit-and-run involving death and is currently at the Chester County Detention Center without bond. Police say he was arrested in Charleston County late last week on unrelated charges.

As we've reported, the crash happened around 3:10 a.m. Monday, February 8 on Interstate-77 northbound near the 59 mile marker in Chester County.

Troopers say a white 2000 Ford Explorer was struck in the rear by a commercial motor vehicle with a distinctive purple bumper.

They say the commercial vehicle ran off the right side of the road and fled the scene.

The victim was identified as Flora Merinda Ellenburg, 49, of Salisbury, South Carolina. Ellenburg was a passenger in the Explorer and died on scene of blunt force trauma to the head due to ejection. Authorities say she was not wearing a seat-belt.

The driver of the Explorer, who was wearing a seat-belt, was transported to a Charlotte hospital for treatment.

A bond hearing has not yet been set in this case.

Anyone with further information on this collision is asked to call the South Carolina Highway Patrol at (803) 896-9621 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
