Leon and Beth Murphy live in Charlotte's Madison park, the neighborhood next to Park Road, and new apartment complexes approved by city council.
They have lived in Madison park for 48 years. Beth Murphy said, “When we first moved here, we were way out of town, that's how we felt."
This neighborhood, which is less than a mile away from the Southpark mall, used to be a dairy farm that belonged to Billy Graham's father. But now, construction of a new apartment complex near their front yard has become part of the daily grind.
Leon Murphy said, "We've had trucks so heavy that it's broken water lines to the house , and messed up our telephone line for weeks."
This isn't the only apartment complex being built. City council announced a new one with 450 apartments, and retail and restaurant space to be built near Pfiefer university.
Molly Wright lives in Madison park and jogs almost every other day. She likes the growth and progress. Wright said, "I'm thrilled about the one on Abbey place - add a lot of congestion." But she worries people will use the neighborhood to avoid the traffic nightmare on Park and Woodlawn.
City Council voted to move forward with the new project, owned by Grubb Properties. There is also space for a hotel - if the owners can find someone to operate it.
