Pilot dies after crashing plane into wooded area in Union County

The Union County Sheriff's Office said a man is dead after his plane crashed into a wooded area on Tarlton Mill Road. 

Deputies said the plane is believed to have gone down due to mechanical problems. They said the pilot called in to report issues earlier in the day. 

The sheriff's office said the plane went down around 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18. 

The pilot has been identified as James Howard Cook, 68, of Lexington, North Carolina.

The FAA is continuing to investigate.
