CHARLOTTE, NC - CMPD has identified the driver involved in an accident that killed a West Mecklenburg High School student.
Charges are pending for Austin Locke, 18, who remains in critical condition, according to CMPD.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is continuing to investigate the single-vehicle crash.
The accident happened at 9:13 a.m. Tuesday, March 1 at 10624 Windy Grove Road.
Upon arrival, police say they found four victims in a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse.
They say three people were transported to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. Heaven Seay, 15, was pronounced dead on scene.
Information and evidence gathered on scene led detectives to determine the Mitsubishi Eclipse was being driven at a high rate of speed on Windy Grove Road.
Police say Locke lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the oncoming traffic lane, then drove off the left side of the road and struck a tree. Speed is listed as a contributing factor.
All passengers inside the vehicle were students at West Mecklenburg High School. Locke was on his way to work but his friends asked for a ride, according to his sister Becca Locke.
The two other passengers inside the vehicle have been identified as Gerado Gillen, 18 and 17-year-old Esmerelda Hermosillo.
Students at West Mecklenburg High School remembered Seay Tuesday morning.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information on this case is asked to call Detective Sammis (704) 336-8862 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
