MATTHEWS, NC (FOX 46) - Businesses around the construction site on Idlewild Road and NC-51 are over the noise, people cutting through the parking lot and the constant dust.
"I’ve gone home with my car covered with red dirt more than enough," Nova’s Bakery and Coffee Shop Employee Joe Woods said.
Now, hearing the project has been delayed has them even more frustrated and fearful their businesses will continue to lose money.
"It’s very slow, very slow, even food lion," Topline Nail Salon Manager Mike Ngyun said. He tells FOX 46, his loyal customers continue to come but walk-ins have dropped completely.
"My regular customers they want to, from 51 turn into here but they can't. They have to take Lawyers Road. It takes them 20-15 minute delay for my appointments," Ngyun said.
"It's impacted my commute a couple days. I live just a couple miles down the road but a couple of day's I’ve had to go into mint hill. Up around and it's taken me 15-20 minutes to get here for 2 miles down the road," Wood said.
The construction delay is due to Windstream Utilities Company not being able to relocate the utilities on time.
Ngyun says his business can't handle another month and wants Blythe Construction to put some extra days in to finish the project on August 18th like it was originally scheduled to.
"They can do weekend or work during the night. That way they can be on time and it's good for (because) school (starts) back soon," Ngyun said.
NCDOT says they expect the project to finish on August 28th when school starts back up.
