Abuse lead to death of 2-month-old child in Rowan County

UPDATE July 22, 2017 1:30pm:     Houston Ray McCarn has been located and arrested.  His bond was denied and he is in custody at the Rowan County Detention Center.

A year long investigation by the Rowan County Sheriff's Office leads to murder charges for the parents of a two-month-old.

Detectives with the Rowan County Criminal Investigation Division say they started investigating on July 30, 2016, after receiving a 911 call from the mother at 120 Van St in Rockwell about her child not breathing.  The child was deceased when authorities arrived on scene. The body of the child was sent to the NC Medical Examiners Office where it was determined that the baby had suffered from recent trauma.

Over the next several months detectives say more information became available and additional witnesses were located and interviewed. When the autopsy results were released this month, investigators obtained warrants for first degree murder and felony child abuse on Amber Lane Scarborough, 17, and her live-in boyfriend at the time, Houston Ray McCarn, 19.

Amber Lane Scarborough was arrested Friday night, July 21, on Lower Stone Church Rd in Rockwell, NC. Authorities are still searching for Houston McCarn, who is currently on probation in Cabarrus County.

Anyone with information on McCarn's whereabouts are asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 866-639-5245.
