Accused jewelry thieves found passed out with child in the car

- A couple accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and cash from a house in Iredell County were found passed out in their vehicle with drugs and a small child in the back seat, deputies said. 

The Iredell County Sheriff's office said on Monday, August 7 they received a report of cash and jewelry valuing $5,550 taken from a home. Items stolen included a coin collection along with several rings and $210 in cash.  

The victims were able to provide possible suspects and explained Melissa Marie Smyle had been in the house just before the items went missing. Deputies said a  number of stolen items were found inside Smyle's home.

During the investigation deputies learned Smyle and Cody Lynn Hairyes were in a relationship. Deputies were able to locate three rings that were sold to a pawn shop in Troutman by Hairyes. All the items recovered were returned to the owner with a value of $2,200.

Smyle and Hairyes were charged with obtaining property by false pretense.

At the time of their arrest, the couple was found passed out in a vehicle in a parking lot on Shelton Ave. with a small child in the car. Statesville Police charged Smyle with possession of heroin, misdemeanor child abuse, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hairyes was charged with possession of heroin and misdemeanor child abuse.  

Smyle was placed under a $25,000 secured bond for the felony larceny and an additional $25,000 secured bond for possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, and misdemeanor child abuse. Hairyes was placed under a secured $9,999 secured bond for the obtaining property by false pretense warrant and an additional $9,999 secured bond for possession of heroin and misdemeanor child abuse.

The investigation is ongoing and the Department of Social Services has been contacted.
