ALEXANDER COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Firefighters in Alexander County were forced to take cover Tuesday evening after a man fired shots at them while they were responding to a call.
Michael Douglas Porter, 54, was arrested and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon of emergency personnel.
The Alexander County Sheriff's Office says around 5:30 p.m., Alexander County communications received a call about a grass fire on Icard Ridge Rd. in the Bethlehem Community.
The Bethlehem Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. Upon arrival, the firefighters heard a loud pop and learned that it came from a man who lived across the street firing a gun at them.
The fireman told the resident to go back inside of his house as they retreated to the fire truck for cover. They called for law enforcement and Alexander County Sheriff's deputies responded.
They took Porter into custody at that time. He is now being held at the Alexander County Detention Center under a $20,000 bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for July 16.
