CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - An arrest has been made in connection to two rape cases dating back to 1981, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Johnny Ealey, 64, is facing a slew of charges including first-degree rape, second-degree rape, and two counts of burglary.
In the summer months of 1981, several burglaries occurred in the area of Beatties Ford Road where two women were awakened and sexually assaulted by Ealey who was armed with a knife, police said.
The first confirmed case happened on May 6, 1981. The woman told police a man forced his way into her home. He was armed with a knife and sexually assaulted her. She told police after the attack the suspect cut the phone line and fled from the scene.
The second confirmed case occurred on June 26, 1981. The woman reported that she was awakened by a man holding a knife. She said the man sexually assaulted her while using the knife as a threat of force. After the attack the man fled the scene.
In both cases, the women were treated at the hospital and evidence was collected, police said. Evidence in these cases were originally analyzed in 1981, but underwent additional testing in both 2014 and 2016. As a result, Ealey was identified as a suspect.
Ealey was arrested on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 by his parole officer in Georgia and will be extradited to North Carolina, police said. These cases are still open and being actively investigated.
