Belmont, N.C. - On Thursday, close to one hundred performers walked into a music mashup - a local blend of Glee meets American Idol. They're trying out for a new singing restaurant owned by the Jonas Brothers family.
Singers warmed up their vocal chords while guitar players tuned their strings. They were getting ready to walk into their one-on-one audition with the father of the pop singers.
"I can't really decide what to play. Maybe some Vance Joy or Jimi Hendrix,” said Paulina Evers as she held her guitar.
"The second guy came in and said he used to work for Al Green. Then I said, well, I better play some Al Green," said Caleb Davis.
Evers and Davis both say they perform regularly in Charlotte. For some others auditioning, it could be their first time.
"I usually just sing in the car or the shower. I just wanted to try something new," said Kayla Journey.
"I feel like music is the soundtrack to my life. It's like the blood going through my veins," said Quardney Dwalt, also a singer.
All of them say they hope to either be part of the house band or a waiter-performer at Nellie’s Southern Kitchen in the heart of Belmont's downtown.
"I'm hoping it's both a cool thing to do in my 20's and a stepping stone to a bigger and better thing for me," said Dwalt.
"I watch Glee and they had a restaurant like this. I could be like Rachel Berry,” said Journey.
"It's nice to have somewhere close to play. I thought I'd just check and try it out,” said Davis.
"I've been waiting for an opportunity like this. When I saw it, I thought, I better go get it," said Evers.
Nellie's southern Kitchen will serve lunch and dinner with a musical flair. It’s expected to be serving its customers with song in time for the holidays.
The restaurant is named after Jonas' maternal grandmother and is a tribute to the Jonas’ family's roots in North Carolina dating back to the 1760's.
