Avery County Sheriff's Office investigating possible drowning

- The Avery County Sheriff's Office is investigating a possible drowning after a body surfaced in a river Wednesday afternoon.

On Sunday, the Sheriff's Office told FOX 46 that a man was swimming at Elk River Falls and was swept under a current. He did not resurface, and officials deemed the incident fatal.

Just before noon on Wednesday, the Sheriff's Office was notified by dispatch of human remains in the river. Firefighters and rescue crews also responded to the scene.

A body matching the description of Thomas McCardle Jr. was recovered and taken to the Medical Examiner's Office for a positive identification.

"The torrential rains last night may have contributed to the body finally surfacing today," the Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post

“Our prayers go out to this young man’s family and friends," the Sheriff's Office wrote. "However, even during this terribly sad time, we all have got to know about the life story of a tremendous young man, his victory to walk after an accident which doctors said would never happen, his tremendous faith in God and his wonderful father and mother and for that, we have all been greatly blessed."
