CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Michael Duane Brown, the man accused of killing his girlfriend in their south Charlotte apartment, was denied bond in court on Thursday.
The murder shocked Brown’s neighbors, who said she never heard the couple arguing, and came as somewhat of a surprise for a person with a couple of prior drug charges, but nothing domestic violence-related.
Police said Brown shot and killed his girlfriend, Whitney King, early Thursday morning in front of a 6-month-old baby inside their Steele Creek apartment. Investigators said he then abandoned that baby to drive just over a mile away to the police station and confess.
Whitney’s profile picture on her Facebook page, shows her and Brown smiling and holding a baby.
“To hear that it was possibly a lady I wave to everyday was kind of a shock and then an infant being left in the house, that's pretty bad,” neighbor Wayne Manigault said.
A couple of neighbors told FOX 46 Charlotte they woke up startled by the commotion they heard overnight at the Harlowe Apartments on Point South Dr.
“Last night I heard some argument and it was really loud, so I peeked out my window because it woke me up so I peeked out my window to see what was going on,” Manigault said. “I was really shocked because it doesn't happen, you just don't see police over here like that."
CMPD checked for FOX 46 and didn't find any calls out to Whitney's apartment in the last five months. In fact, a neighbor said the community, as a whole, is quiet.
“Ever since I've been here there's been no problems. I've not seen police up here arresting anybody or anything like that,” he told FOX 46.
He's just heartbroken over the fact that Whitney is dead, her boyfriend is in jail, and a baby is now with social services.
"That's pretty bad now that the child has no mother or father, what happens?" Manigault questioned.
Brown is due back in court later this month to face the murder charge.
